Q. Do we have responsibilities as an employer at the Christmas party?

Yes, we know summer has only just ended – and we saying the “C” word already, but if you want a smooth, stress-free festive season, now’s the time to start planning your Christmas party or end-of-year celebrations. Planning ahead now means less last-minute stress and a celebration your team will love.

And yes, you absolutely have responsibilities – even if the event is outside normal working hours and offsite, it’s still considered a work-related activity!

That means your usual policies on behaviour, harassment, and health & safety still apply. Our top tips are to:

✔️ Remind staff of expected conduct and behaviour before the event
✔️ Keep an eye on alcohol consumption – ensure non-alcoholic alternatives are available

✔️Make sure people know your stance on the misuse of drugs
✔️Arrange safe transport options home where possible
✔️ Have a plan for handling any incidents quickly and fairly

✔️ Book your venue early – the best ones get snapped up quickly
✔️ Set a budget – and remember to include food, drinks, and entertainment, and possibly getting people home safely too.
✔️ Think inclusively – choose activities that everyone can enjoy, and remember, not everyone drinks alcohol!
✔️ Communicate clearly – let your team know the date well in advance
